Years ago, I showed you my Chambord Soap Pump and Disarrono Soap Pump. I hate cluttered bathroom vanities so it only made sense to replace my lotion bottle.

Vanity Makeover - Lotion Bottle

Vanity Makeover – Lotion Bottle

The pump is repurposed from a disposable hand soap dispenser, and the bottle is a repurposed Disaronno bottle.  I replaced the straw with the longer one from the lotion bottle and trimmed off an inch. I resized and printed a French Chic image and Modpodged it onto the front of the bottle and sealed it with a few extra coats.

In the future, I’ll make sure my lotion is purchased in a squirt bottle so my glamorous dispenser will be easier to refill.

XOXO,

Ikea Mirror Made Glamourous

or How I Fingerpainted My Way to Glamorous!
On a shopping trip to IKEA this summer, I spotted a picture frame that would make a fantastic frame for a mirror in my powder room. After walking a bit further in the store, I found the same frame with a mirror already in it! Score!

The same day we got home, I covered the mirror carefully so I could paint the frame. I used a metallic spray paint in “Oil Rubbed Bronze.” I was disappointed with the turn out of the color, it looked more like blackened bronze. It didn’t have the dimensions I desired. I wanted to show the ornate detail of the frame. Hubster mounted the frame on the wall for me, I thought I could figure out what to do to fix it if the mirror was in place. It was several months while I pondered what to do next. At the craft store I found all types of bronze painted and my answer was in the “aged bronze” bottle. Once home, I used my finger to test the color in a small place. Before I knew it, I was finger painting accents all over the frame. I stood back to view my work and loved the results. All I had to do was get in touch with my inner preschooler.

The powder room is in the middle of our house, with my windows to help provide natural lighting for a better picture. Next time I will prime the object with a copper-colored spray paint before spraying a light coat of the oil rubbed bronze.

Two summers ago I met a woman selling her work at a local craft/art fair. She had some cute framed pieces where she had layered a bold silhouette image over a page from an antique book. None of her pieces appeased me, but I did appreciate the artistic concept.

I’m working on a French Chic powder room makeover and I wanted to create some wall art that would give it a personal touch. I had planned for this piece to be in that powder room. However, since I used a monogram, it looks really good in many different rooms of our home… Decisions, decisions.monogram.jpg

Step 1
Type a personal message and translate (optional). Print in a lighter color on aged paper. Or tear a carefully selected page from your favorite novel, script or sheet of music.

Step 2
Choose a silhouette in a bold or dark color and print centered on top of script page. Try using The Graphics Fairy for great ideas.

Step 3
Add matting and frame.

Voilà! Ready to hang and enjoy!

I translated a poem about marriage into French and choose a curly font in a light color. I printed this in a light color on a natural colored piece of paper. I printed darker color D and used a black thin-tip marker to track over a few piece, I wanted to make the monogram dual-tone. Then I add the white matting and bronze frame! So easy to make, that the decisions are the most difficult part of the process.

These would make great Christmas gifts or wedding gifts for a newly wed couple!

If you could choose a page from any novel or script, what would you choose?

I’ve been working on a painting for my powder room for a few weeks. I prepped the canvas, started to paint and then (unhappy with the result) started all over again. I got so frustrated, that I turned my canvas and easel to face the wall. Last night, I realized that I had put my canvas on “time out”! I turned it back around and started again. It was late and I was tired, but inspiration hit. I continued to work even with my exhausted shaky hands.

French Chic Postage Painting

French Chic Postage Painting

It started as a vintage postage stamp Paris collage type painting… I’m not sure how to define it. The quality isn’t perfect and smooth, but I like it. It’s powder room perfect.

I took the picture before the paint was dry and the clear coat sprayed…

What project did you work on this weekend?

Spray Paint Series: Salvaged Heater in Powder Room

I really thought we’d have to tear out and replace this heater, it wouldn’t be too expensive to replace, but we wanted to see if we could salvage it first. I’m not even sure why we have this type of heater in the powder room, I know it doesn’t have any floor vents hooked up to our heat pump, but it’s a small room that in completely interior…

I really wish I’d taken a before pic. I think the original color was tan, but I couldn’t tell due to the vast amount of rust that had taken over the heater. It was so bad you needed a new tetanus shot just from looking at it. I cleaned off the heater and sanded it down. Then cleaned it and sanded it again. Lather, rinse, repeat… After many attempts I was able to get it mostly smooth. And then I covered the walls & floor carefully and applied a few base coats of Rust-Oleum.

After about 6 coats, it finally looked like a heater again. Thanks Rust-Oleum!

Have you salvaged anything rusty recently?

The powder room is where I got bad at taking before photos, maybe I was in a rush to get this bathroom started.

Here's a Peek at our Powder Room Before

Here's a Peek at our Powder Room Before

I had plans to replace our hideous light fixture (can you see it up there?), when Hubster suggested that it was similar in shape to the one I had been eyeing. I had been blinded by the brass; I do not like brass, especially faux brass. I do however love bronze…

Hubster removed the light fixture from the wall. I tried to remove the globes to protect them from the paint (and thoroughly clean the nooks and crannies), but apparently they were extremely well attached. I had to be very creative in covering the globes with paper and painter’s tape, since I’d have to spray the fixture from several angles. So with a few coats of the “oil-rubbed bronze” spray paint, I was able to transform this light fixture and spare its life.

Bronze & Beautiful

I can’t wait to show you the entire transformation, just a little more work…

What do you think? Are you a brass or bronze fan?
