Decoupaged Family Monogram

I love including our the first letter of our surname, “D”, throughout our home. Remember this one?

I purchased this wooden letter from the craft store and painted the edges “raw umber”. Then I decoupaged the top with definitions (similar to this decoupaged apple), words and names that are meaningful to our family. A quick coat of clear acrylic sealer and it was ready for the wall. I’m not sure where exactly in our entryway I want to mount it, but the walls will be painted tan before then, so it’ll pop more.

Two summers ago I met a woman selling her work at a local craft/art fair. She had some cute framed pieces where she had layered a bold silhouette image over a page from an antique book. None of her pieces appeased me, but I did appreciate the artistic concept.

I’m working on a French Chic powder room makeover and I wanted to create some wall art that would give it a personal touch. I had planned for this piece to be in that powder room. However, since I used a monogram, it looks really good in many different rooms of our home… Decisions, decisions.monogram.jpg

Step 1
Type a personal message and translate (optional). Print in a lighter color on aged paper. Or tear a carefully selected page from your favorite novel, script or sheet of music.

Step 2
Choose a silhouette in a bold or dark color and print centered on top of script page. Try using The Graphics Fairy for great ideas.

Step 3
Add matting and frame.

Voilà! Ready to hang and enjoy!

I translated a poem about marriage into French and choose a curly font in a light color. I printed this in a light color on a natural colored piece of paper. I printed darker color D and used a black thin-tip marker to track over a few piece, I wanted to make the monogram dual-tone. Then I add the white matting and bronze frame! So easy to make, that the decisions are the most difficult part of the process.

These would make great Christmas gifts or wedding gifts for a newly wed couple!

If you could choose a page from any novel or script, what would you choose?

Monogrammed Wooden Hangers

I had one pack of wooden hangers from IKEA, some from BB&B and a few random ones from before and I wanted a more uniformed look. I know what you’re thinking, they’re just hangers… it’s overkill, but I really love the new monogrammed hangers for our coat closet.

First, I used a thin sharpie to trace a “D” onto the midsection of the hangers. Then, I hand-painted my new monogram with a dark brown (raw umber) acrylic paint. It took 3 thin coats to achieve a rich solid color. After all

owing them to dry, I used one coat of a clear sealant spray meant for acrylic paint.

I love entertaining. I’m not really a fan of sorting through coats at the end of a “throw it on the bed” parties. In order to always have room for our guests’ coats, we keep our out-of-season coats in the back of Pumpkin’s massive closet (seriously, it’s big enough to be another room).

I think this would be an excellent gift for a housewarming, a college freshman moving into a dorm or newlywed couples (what bride doesn’t love showing off her new initial?).
