Making An Entrance: Urn Makeover

I’ve had these resin urns for over 7 years. The original finish was perfect with the siding and accents of our first home. Since then, the finish has faded, and the color is completely washed out against our light grey siding.

Due to the lack of mature trees on our property, our house gets full sun all day long during the summer and the harsh winter winds whip without the windbreak. I’ve struggled to keep even hardy perennials and evergreens alive in these planters.

Urn Update

I want to update them, but I’m unsure how spray paint will hold up on the worn finish. I decided to test out the paint on two urns I keep on the front porch. Next summer, I’ll decide if I should update the others. I also purchased realistic faux (gasp!) topiaries for the two urns. I’d like to order three more to place outside the garage doors.

Hopefully, this helps make the front entrance a little more welcoming…

Festival of Lights – Day 3

From Brassy to Classy!

I had some spray paint leftover from the light fixture makeover. However, the shiny brass finish on the three hall lights was mocking me. The shape of the lights are fine, it’s just the finish that needed updating.halllightmakeoverThe lights were fairly easy to take down, but I did make Hubster do the electrical part. The most time-consuming part was taping each little glass pane! I also taped over the sockets and the sticker warning me not to use more than 25 watt bulbs. After a few coats of oil-rubbed bronze spray paint and removing all that tape, they looked so much better.

Hubster then mounted them back on the ceiling for me. He decided he doesn’t like where this is going… 5 ceiling fans to update, 1 kitchen light, 1 more bathroom light… Oh, well! those are projects for a later date.

After a fresh coat of bright white paint, I added a small touch in our master suite. Two simple words differentiating our closet doors.

I designed and ordered these letters from Do It Yourself Lettering and was thrilled at how great they looked, easy they were to apply, and inexpensive they were.

What small project with a big impact have you worked on recently?

Due to family health reasons, I’ve been on a long hiatus… hopefully, I’ll get back in the routine of posting again.

Master Bath Makeover
The master bathroom is the last room to finally get painted (except I have to still paint the trim in most rooms). I decided to take some of the momentum and finally start the bathroom makeover… staring with the faucets.

During my spray paint series, I’ve painted many different surfaces yet never something that gets used heavily throughout the day. I’ve read several blog posts about painting faucets, but I’ve been skeptical about how well the paint would hold up to frequent use. Since I could easily replace them if needed, the sink faucets were the perfect way to give it a try.

I used Rust-oleum Metallic in “Antique Brass Metallic” as the base coat and topped it off with Rust-oleum Universal Metallic in “Oil Rubbed Bronze”.

Guest Room Bed

One of the fantastic things about having a bigger house is actually having a guest room. A few years ago we got a new mattress and boxspring and kept our old ones knowing we’d have a guest room in the future. We went to visit my family in Philly over our Christmas break and my mother gave us the bed frame & headboard from my grandmother’s spare room. I guess my parents were tired of having the boxspring & mattress on the floor while they stay over.

I wanted to redo this with a cute crackle finish, but Hubster vetoed the shabby chic look (I’ll just have to pull it off in other parts of the room).

After a thorough cleaning and several coats of white paint (I used the trim & door paint we purchased from Sherwin Williams, knowing it would hold up to a good cleaning), we carried the headboard and frame upstairs and quickly assembled them.

I know the after picture isn’t fantastic, I still need some time to create some bedding and cute throw pillows. One step closer to actually having our guest room put together.

What is one DIY home project this is on your short list?
