AKA Cheerful Coral Bells

Whether used as an accent plant for your garden borders or as filler plant, heucheras (commonly know as coral bells) are a must have perennial for your landscape.

This morning, I was busy dividing three existing plants into 11 new plants. Let me share a few reasons why I love heucheras so much…

10 Reasons to Grow Heuchera

10. Heucheras are available in a plethora or colors. Since many of my other plants are green, I prefer bronze purple and red purple varieties.

9.  They are extremely easy to propagate.

8.  They can tolerate a variety of soil conditions.

7.   The foliage and flowers both make excellent cuttings for floral arrangements.

6.  Depending on the variety you choose and your climate, they can tolerate full shade or full sun.

5.  These plants are essentially low maintenance.

4.  Heucheras look great with a variety of other plants.

3.  They are deer- and pest-resistant.

2.  Butterflies are attracted to the little flowers.

1.  Hummingbirds also love the blossoms.

On Mother’s Day, Hubster & I purchased four weeping cherry trees that had finished blooming for the season. We had a 45 minute drive home and wrapped the bottoms to protect the root balls. The day quickly turned windy and chilly and the few sparse leaves on the trees were damaged. Since then, we have had a few scorching hot days, and soaking wet days.

In one month, the trees have shown tremendous new growth, and one tree gave us a very special Father’s Day gift. Our weeping cherry has begun to bloom again!

Spring blooms came late this year, but with a sudden wave of heat, the may flowers quickly showcased. Then there was a snap of cold and again sudden heat. Fickle Mother Nature has drastically affected all the blooms. The delicate cherry tree blossoms have disappeared, and the sweet smell of lilacs shrubs and black locust trees are now fading. My alliums bursting with vibrant color. A few of my red coral bells are opening.

This week has been busy in our garden, both our potager and landscaping. I think the muscles in my back are proving that we overdid it… (Hubster said that I’m not allowed to have any sore muscles or back pain while I’m in my 20’s….)

Indoors: I sowed more seeds; lettuces, cabbage, and even some indoor radishes (I want to see how they perform indoors and might try to grow some year round…). I started more romaine and celery from kitchen scraps, and removed he potatoes from my kitchen windows sill to make room…

Outdoors:Hubster built me four new raised beds, one 1’x2′ for my Jerusalem artichokes (aka: sunchokes) and three 1.5’x1.5′ for my sweet potatoes, potatoes and blue potatoes.

In the largest raised bed I planted some cauliflower and celery starters I purchased from the local garden store. We had a few nights when temperatures dropped and frost hit, but I was prepared. I used glass bowls and vases as mini greenhouses to protect my tender plants.

I took a break from my seeds last week since I went away for the weekend. When I was gone, Hubster just about killed my seedlings! Fortunately, I was able to nurture most of them back to health.

Pumpkin also munched on all the scallions and didn’t save the roots, except for three that were left in the container, my supply is busted…  I think these boys are trying to sabotage my garden!

This week, I was able to directly sow more seeds in my raised beds. Time for more carrots, peas, sugar snap peas and radishes.

One of my favorite things to post about is my garden… Spring was especially difficult for me. Now that we’re homeowners again, I no longer need to wistfully dream of gardening. This summer, we’ll be updating and putting more energy into the house than the outdoors. Even though a few junk plants need to be ripped out, there are difficult to landscape areas and several overgrown features, I did hunt for the few hidden gems that the previous owners left.

A small maple stands guard at the top of the hill in the front of the house.

In the far back corner, native day lilies hide with chagrin in the shade. Don’t worry, I’ll soon replant you where you can flourish.

A lilac bush stands alone along the road, the hostas are chewed and lonely, an azalea is hiding beneath a vine, and a fire pit needs some love. I also remember in the spring, seeing a few daffodils in the front and a few grape hyacinths in the back. I can’t wait to see what else awaits us…

Which is your favorite?

PS… This is my 400th post!
