DIY, updates

This DIY isn’t exactly difficult or really anything to boast. However, getting rid of the last ugly brass touches made a major impact on the overall feel. After I swapped 18 interior doorknobs, it certainly felt like a major project. doorknob

DIY, flooring, home decor

This DIY project was a time consuming project spanning over several months. We replaced the carpet, laminate, and linoleum flooring in our family room, dining room, hallway, entry, and powder room.

After we ordered and picked up the hardwood flooring, the boxes remained stacked in our living room until we could decide how to approach the project…

Tearing out the old flooring was a daunting task. Removing all the staples was awful!beforefloor
That’s when our project halted again…

Which direction should we run the planks? What room should we start in? Are we going to buy or rent the tools? step234
In the mean time, Hubster leveled the floors and I opened the boxes and mixed the planks for a uniform look.

We decided to rent the equipment. Once Hubster got started, he realized it was much easier than he thought.dancefloors

Over the next few months, I hope to post a few of our home DIY projects leading up to a few bigger reveals. The angles of the photos are not ideal, but I don’t want to giveaway any more clues of the finished projects…

Updating our entryway light fixture has been on my list since we moved in (in 2011)! Nothing about the original one suite our design tastes.before

Hubster and I were browsing a discount store and came across a fantastic deal on a chandelier. The design was simplistic making it the perfect addition for our space. The finish was brushed nickel which is classic, but I wanted it to pop a little more in our space so I coated it with oil-rubbed bronze spray paint.spraypaint

I had already picked out a ceiling medallion for our entryway. It just needed a good coat of white paint. Hubster & Handy Cousin installed the ceiling medallion and light fixture for me over a weekend.ceilingmedalliondetails

I love how it looks! With every new project and small touch, our house is one step further away from builder’s grade and another step towards our dream home.

Tip Jar for the Laundry Room

For years, I collected all the change (that Hubster and Pumpkin tipped me for my amazing laundry services) in a jam jar.

As soon as I ordered the custom decal for my laundry soap canister, I decided to revamp my tip jar. It’s took me a while to get around to blogging about it. DIY Tip Jar

I followed the same steps as I did before. I carefully cleaned a spice jar from Penzeys. After gluing a drawer pull to the top of the lid, I coated them with oil-rubbed bronze spray paint. Finally, I applied the decal to the front of the glass.

School Mania & Cute Crate Seats

At the end of the 2014-2015 school year, I was preparing myself for a subject change to science at the middle school. I was re-familiarizing myself with earth science, I reached out to other science teacher friends, and I was photographing geological formations throughout Pennsylvania and New York. I was going to rock (no pun intended) my first year as a science teacher.

Halfway through the summer, I got a phone call asking me to come into school. To my surprise, they decided to move me to first grade instead! I was stunned for the first few days, but also very excited! Ever since that call, I’ve been working 60+ hours a week preparing for the beginning of the school year! Needless to say, I’ve been neglecting my blog (well there are a ton of projects that I could post, but then my life blog would transform into a teacher blog).

TODAY IS OUR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!! How could that be? I didn’t even have a summer yet!

If you’re a teacher you know there are a plethora of tutorials for these crate seats on Pinterest (If you’re not a teacher, these crate seats would still work wonderfully in a playroom or reading corner for your kids, nieces, and nephews.)  The Apple Tree Room’s tutorial is my favorite. Mine is not a tutorial. I just wanted to share some additional thoughts and tips.

I made 6 crate seats for under $20, but I had some of the supplies on hand. If you make 6 without having any supplies on hand, you could probably do it under $50.

Pricing –
Frames: The crates are selling at my local Target for $2.99 (I bought 3, and previously had three). We had leftover plywood from a previous project, but a typical sheet runs $20.

Cushions: Fabric can get expensive, depending on the print and type of fabric. Luckily, you have many options here. JoAnn’s often has 50% coupons (I only used 1 1/2 yards of fabric). Patterned twin-size top sheets can be found around $10 or even a cute fabric shower curtain would work. If you’re a crafty person, chances are you probably already have some extra fabric. Also, printed men’s dress shirts can be found at thrift stores for a small price. The foam was not on sale at my local craft store, so I used a twin mattress egg crate topper (Walmart sells them for under $10) and added two layers. The ribbon pull tabs aren’t necessary, but are nice. Luckily, most crafters have plenty of spare ribbon or you can purchase a spool for around $1.

I’m lucky enough to have my teabags imported from Scotland (Thanks, Riotflower!) Besides the oversized plastic bags, I needed somewhere a little more posh to store them.
