I vetoed Pumpkin’s right to choose the colors for the kid bathroom. First of all, it’s the bathroom that our overnight guests use. Plus, we already had most of the bathroom decor from our first house. Since I wanted a new scheme for the master bathroom, the kid bathroom gets the preloved rugs, curtains, towels, vases, etc…

For a year, I’ve had three blank canvases set aside for new wall art. Pumpkin and I discussed a few different ideas that we wanted to paint and hang, but we never really settled on one idea. Pumpkin’s free time has mostly been consumed with football and hunting (like Hubster, like Pumpkin), so this kid intended project was really me on my own. I got tired of waiting, and he didn’t seem to mind.

The bathroom walls are tan and the trim is white. Blue, green, and purple (the same three colors that fill my closet, and my classroom) are the accessory colors. I painted each canvas a bold shade; lavender, calypso blue and moss green. I used a toilet paper roll (roll art is all over the internet) as a stamper and added a circle print to each canvas. Perfect for any kid’s little hands, because it’s so simple and easy to hold. The circles may appear white in the picture, but they’re really a lighter shade of the base color.

These painting were intended to be a base. We’re still debating if we want to add a tribal frog graphic to each print or not…. The picture doesn’t accurately portray the colors, due to the lack of proper lighting.

What projects have you recently finished?

It’s time for me to try to get back on track with my blog. This November… My grandmother spent the month in the NSICU and is now finally in a rehab center. I had a plethora of doctor appointments. Grades were due for the first marking period, followed by 26 parent teacher conferences. Another stress factor? We were hoping on decorating and finishing our dining room before our Thanksgiving feast, but we’re running a little late. Maybe before New Year’s Eve. Due to my high stress levels, Thanksgiving break was needed now more than ever.

Five things reduce stress for me: 1) baking, 2) painting, 3) friends, 4) bubble baths and 5) well, nevermind… Even though my break wasn’t stress free, it was filled with stress reducers. The best way to end my break? In an empty house, pulling out a fresh blank canvas… or three. I quickly painted this triptych of alliums (my favorite bulb flower) for our dining room. My mind and soul relaxing with each stroke, back to a place where I feel more balanced.

The photo was taken with bad lighting at a bad angle. Once Hubster hangs the paintings on the wall I will update the post with a better picture.

Now it is time for a bubble bath and an early night to bed.

How was your Thanksgiving?

Rainy Saturday
I’ve been extremely stressed recently, on top of work, two weeks before the end of my course, my professor decided to extend the class! Can she really do that? We’ve stalled on our home projects. There are still walls to be painted and boxes to be unpacked… I often forget how much painting relaxes me. Painting canvases, not walls…  played around with the idea of flowering branches and birds. I played around with a silhouette idea, but didn’t like it for my walls. The inspiration has to hit at just the right time.

Today, while checking out a local community yard sale (during the pouring rain), I saw a cute stencil. Now, I’d never stencil flowers and birds on my walls (and I was quite harsh about the ones on the walls when we bought our first house), but I saw a cute stencil and thought that it would be great as a painting. For 25¢, you can’t go wrong.

Quickly after we got home I was playing around with the stencil. I was going to use it on my canvas, but it had three layers of stenciling craziness and the result would become a mess. So I looked at the image on the packet and used the images to guide my painting.

I rummaged through an unpacked box to find my paint brushes and acrylic paints. I kept my blank canvases handy, knowing that I’ve been itching to paint. I still need to spray it with a clear coat before Hubster hangs it on the wall. This is what I created…

This painting is perfect for my guest room, It’ll tone down the green walls and matched the bird-cage theme.

What did you do yesterday???

Happy Early Valentine’s Day Everyone!

Hubster & I always make homemade Valentine’s for one another. In lieu of a Valentine’s Day card for Hubster this year, I made a perpetual Valentine for our home. Now I just need to get him to hand it up…

Valentine's Button Art Heart

Valentine's Button Art Heart

I started by painting a base coat on a blank canvas and blended a few shades together. Then I used a darker paint and stenciled it over the base color. Last, I glue button on the canvas in a heart shape and I wrote him a special note on the back of the frame. The brown and blue match our bedroom decor well (colors are a bit off in the picture).

I’m also working on another button art panel for our living room (not a heart though)…

When is the last time you made or received a homemade Valentine?

Hubster and I have several blank walls in the house. Other than photographs, we have no artwork on our walls. The bare walls have begun to nag him more and more. I looked through paintings at many stores, generic art that doesn’t go with our style.

On a whim today, I purchased two canvases (I haven’t painted in years). Hubster had ruined my good brushes using them to paint the trim in the house. He has no clue when it comes to art. I decided to paint a river landscape for the bathroom. It’s the only girlie room in the house, using Monet inspired colors (I do have big plans to redecorate the bathroom when we add another bathroom in the next year or so but then the new bathroom will become the Monet bathroom).

The bright sunlight washed out the vibrant colors just a bit in the picture I took. What do you think of my painting?
