From Recycled T-Shirts to Fringe Scarves

Scarves are my favorite autumn & winter accessory. I love to wear one over a short or long sleeve t-shirt, with skinny jeans tucked into my knee-high boots. I have at least 20 scarves in my closet (well, Hubster DID insist that I reduce the amount of shoes I own)…

I saw this quick tutorial for a fringe scarf last year and added it to my to-do-list. While cleaning out my closest, I pulled aside a few stretched out & stained shirts that don’t get worn. I decided it was time to tackle this quick craft. It was so simple! I used my rotary blade to slice the fringe.

Pattern 2 test run… Three small flowers minus the buttons, my Easter flowers. Hubster recently revealed how much he likes purple on me… It’s not my favorite color, but it is one of my favorite to wear. 10 years ago I owned one purple sweater, 6 years ago I bought purple glasses and since then have incorporated more into my wardrobe. I have a few students who told me they like when I wear purple, because I look like Daphne from Scooby Doo… I think that’s a compliment.

Flirty? Felt? Flower? Must be time for spring…
I’m working on a gift for a friend who liked my flirty fleece ear warmers (get tutorial here). I wanted to update the style for spring and summer wear. I did a test run for myself, before creating one for her… I’m still playing with the balance of it. I like the five layers I used on the flowers for the ear warmers, but the band was larger. With a simple headband elastic, fewer layers seem more balanced… or may that’s just me playing it safe. Maybe I’ll add another layer next time. These shades of blue and green are some of my favorite colors to wear (maybe because they brighten my reddish hair and make my green eyes pop).

These would make great party favors or would be great peeking out of an Easter basket.

One of my friends from work just found out that she may deliver her baby girl a littler early than expecting. She likes the headbands I made for my niece and I was planning on crocheting some for her. My nieces were just a tad too big for a newborn, so I made these a little smaller. They are stretchy so they will work for her for a little while. I plan to make her a few more in a larger size, since babies grow so fast…

The top head band I crocheted with lavender baby yarn. Each row had 3 half double stitches and chain 3 on the end. I added a purple and hot pink ribbon flower.

The middle headband was crocheted with a light blue baby yarn. I used 2 double stitches per row and a chain on the end. I adorned it with a 8 petal ribbon flower.

The third headband was made with the lavender baby yarn. I crocheted one half double stitch per row with a chain 3 on the end. It is embellished with a flower made of purple ribbon with white polka dots.

What are you crafting now?

Tomorrow (or possible super early Tuesday), we will have a new niece! It’s my SIL’s third child, but with two older boys, this little girl will have no choice but to be spoiled with girlie clothing and accessories (she’s the first granddaughter for my in-laws).

I made her a few spring-inspired headbands…
For the first one, I used baby pink yarn (2 double crochets per row, chain 3) and made a cute hot pink and orange ribbon flower to add. Originally I thought about crocheting the flower, but I like the visual mix of textures.

Her second headband was made with lavender yarn (1 half double crochet, chain 3) embellished with purple ribbon with white polka-dots.

The third headband was crocheted with baby blue yarn (3 double crochets per row, chain 3) and I added a turquoise and lime green flower printed ribbon.

Finally, the fourth one was crocheted with lavender yarn (4 double crochets per row, chain 3) and I added a dark purple and hot pink ribbon flower.

I wanted to make a fifth headband (light green with baby pink and lime green ribbon), but the craft store was out of the color.

Pumpkin wanted to learn to crochet. Since I’m a righty and he’s a lefty, it was a little more difficult to learn and he gave up quickly. Maybe when he’s older we’ll give it another go (or maybe his lefty Aunt B will teach him the next time she’s in from Scotland)…

Any new family members on their way to joining your family soon?

Hubster’s cousin had a birthday party for her little girl today. What does every little girl want to be when she grows up? Either a fairy or a princess… so why not both!

I made a princess tutu for her birthday and a matching hair accessory. Her favorite colors are pink and purple, so I used hot pink and purple tulle and thin purple ribbon to create them. The hair accessory doubles as a cute gift packing bow.

What little girl wouldn’t love this? Something fun for her dress up box.

The past few days I showed you the dress I made for the wedding in NC and the faux fur capelet. We’re driving as I post this.

I was going to create a fascinator for my hair. They’re perfect for emphasizing an updo or jazzing up down hair. I found a few tutorials and began to gather supplies; black hair comb – check, silver flower – check, sparkly glitter – check, hot glue gun – check, black fluffy feathers – nada, zilch, nunca, zero. I looked at four different stores for nice black feathers, the best I could find weren’t even worth using in another craft. This craft project turned into a bust!

I had to resort to purchasing a hair accessory. I was actually pleasantly surprised with this cute feathered headband I found on sale. I do plan to make my own fascinators soon in the future, it’s just a matter of finding the right feathers. Hubster joked with me, “Are you going to start making your own pantyhose too?” No, I am not… nor any of my undergarments or shoes…
