DIY, updates

This DIY isn’t exactly difficult or really anything to boast. However, getting rid of the last ugly brass touches made a major impact on the overall feel. After I swapped 18 interior doorknobs, it certainly felt like a major project. doorknob

DIY, flooring, home decor

This DIY project was a time consuming project spanning over several months. We replaced the carpet, laminate, and linoleum flooring in our family room, dining room, hallway, entry, and powder room.

After we ordered and picked up the hardwood flooring, the boxes remained stacked in our living room until we could decide how to approach the project…

Tearing out the old flooring was a daunting task. Removing all the staples was awful!beforefloor
That’s when our project halted again…

Which direction should we run the planks? What room should we start in? Are we going to buy or rent the tools? step234
In the mean time, Hubster leveled the floors and I opened the boxes and mixed the planks for a uniform look.

We decided to rent the equipment. Once Hubster got started, he realized it was much easier than he thought.dancefloors

Over the next few months, I hope to post a few of our home DIY projects leading up to a few bigger reveals. The angles of the photos are not ideal, but I don’t want to giveaway any more clues of the finished projects…

Updating our entryway light fixture has been on my list since we moved in (in 2011)! Nothing about the original one suite our design tastes.before

Hubster and I were browsing a discount store and came across a fantastic deal on a chandelier. The design was simplistic making it the perfect addition for our space. The finish was brushed nickel which is classic, but I wanted it to pop a little more in our space so I coated it with oil-rubbed bronze spray paint.spraypaint

I had already picked out a ceiling medallion for our entryway. It just needed a good coat of white paint. Hubster & Handy Cousin installed the ceiling medallion and light fixture for me over a weekend.ceilingmedalliondetails

I love how it looks! With every new project and small touch, our house is one step further away from builder’s grade and another step towards our dream home.

From Brassy to Classy!

I had some spray paint leftover from the light fixture makeover. However, the shiny brass finish on the three hall lights was mocking me. The shape of the lights are fine, it’s just the finish that needed updating.halllightmakeoverThe lights were fairly easy to take down, but I did make Hubster do the electrical part. The most time-consuming part was taping each little glass pane! I also taped over the sockets and the sticker warning me not to use more than 25 watt bulbs. After a few coats of oil-rubbed bronze spray paint and removing all that tape, they looked so much better.

Hubster then mounted them back on the ceiling for me. He decided he doesn’t like where this is going… 5 ceiling fans to update, 1 kitchen light, 1 more bathroom light… Oh, well! those are projects for a later date.

curb appeal, DIY, doorbell

One small project at a time, we’re working on our home’s curb appeal. Our original doorbell plate was not doing much to help. Changing it out was an inexpensive & quick DIY project.doorbell

Once I removed the screws and cleaned the siding, we noticed the back of our original doorbell was flush with the siding, and the new doorbell had a part that needed to be recessed into the siding. Hubster untied the wiring, cut a larger hole in the siding, and drilled into the wood to create a space for the new doorbell. If you want to avoid this extra step, remove your current doorbell and look at the back. Order or purchase a doorbell plate that has the same type of back as your original one. He attached the wires to the new doorbell, and we tested it out before mounting it onto the siding.

Since our driveway enters from the back of our house, winds along the side, and curves around the front, the curb appeal of the side door is just as important as the front. The side doorbell didn’t work before, but Hubster fixed the wiring while installing the new one. It also has a shorter ring than the front doorbell, to help use determine at which door someone is waiting. The before/after pics are identical. 🙂

What have you done recently to update your home’s curb appeal?

Kitchen –

This was the previous light fixture that we removed from above the breakfast table. It is obviously older than our house, someone must’ve loved it so much that they put it in their newly built house. However, we do not feel the same way, it’s just not our style. In fact, friends of ours have the same ugly lamp in their home and they feel the same way (as us) about it. Hubster and I think it would be funny to leave the twin lamp on their porch one night…

We reused the light fixture we removed from the dining room. I rotated the arms up to hide the lightbulbs from view and spray painted the metal oil-rubbed bronze. Once we decide the appropriate length, we’ll remove the extra chains and thread the excess wire into the ceiling.

No, it’s not Diwali or Hanukkah in July. Hubster and I just updated two lights in our home.

Dining Room –
This is the light we inherited with the purchase of our home. I don’t like the antique brass color, the fact that I can see the ugly lightbulbs, or the ugly cord visible in the chain…

Previous Light Fixture

Previous Light Fixture

Hubster purchased the new light at a yard sale for $10. The cord was missing from one side, and he thought he’d have to rewire the light. Luckily, the cord hidden inside the lamp and just needed to be fished through. It also did not come with a mounting piece and bolt, so he had to drill a larger hole in the existing one on the ceiling. I did have to spray paint the bolt from the lamp we removed from the kitchen.
