I inherited this antique buffet from my parents years ago, but I had to wait until I had a house with a dining room until they actually released it to my hands. My mother named the buffet Evelyn, after the woman she inherited it from.
When my mother was a child, her and my grandmother used to have tea once a week with a woman named Evelyn. Evelyn and my grandmother had worked together at the Quaker Lace Company in Philadelphia. Evelyn inherited the buffet from her parents who were missionaries in the Dakotas somewhere. All through my mother’s teens, she admired Evelyn’s buffet, wistfully thinking about owning beautiful pieces of furniture some day. Evelyn never got married and when she was older and could no longer care for herself, she moved in with a friend and gave the buffet to my mother.
The buffet was made by Martin Furniture Company in Hickory, N.C.
Evelyn is now home to my linens and booze. With a fresh coat of Old English and Evelyn looks just as fantastic as she did when my mother inherited her. Hubster was never a fan of antique furniture, but I think I’m wearing off on him. Afterall, they don’t make furniture with detail like these anymore.
Now that Evelyn is home, we’re one step closer to revealing our first room reveal.
Do you own any antique furniture?
How nice of Evelyn to give your Mother this wonderful gift — and how fortunate for you to now own it. The piece is really quite beautiful.
It is a fantastic and gorgeous gift indeed!
That is a beautiful piece! I’m so jealous. 🙂 I don’t have any antique furniture right now, our house is too small to bother getting anything more than we have/need. But…one day! I collect smaller antiques right now. Like pottery. It doesn’t take up quite as much room. :-p
Someday 🙂
Evelyn is beautiful and I’m glad you have a place to show her off.
Thanks!
Evelyn is exquisite! You’re right, they really don’t make things like that anymore – how wonderful to have a piece of your family history at home with you.
I agree!
Dear Evelyn:
I enjoyed your company for near 40 years,
I know you will enjoy your new home and family.

That’s a beautiful piece, Rickelle, and one you will always cherish because of its story as well as its beauty. I have many family pieces like that which have a story and I have passed some down to my daughters. Cherish it. Thanks for sharing.

Just found your blog about “Evelyn” while I was researching the history of the Martin Furniture company in NC. I have the identical piece, inherited from my mother in law. I look forward to passing it on to children and grandchildren. It is not only beautiful but very serviceable.
That’s awesome! 🙂 Enjoy Evelyn’s twin!
The Martin Furniture Company was started in 1902 with the help of my great grandfather, George Whiting Hall. He is considered the father of the furniture industry in NC. He himself start Hickory Furniture Co in 1901 when he was on 28. Furniture is a passion of mine and I’m glad you cherish such a nice piece.
Welcome William! Thank you so much for leaving such a great comment. I’m glad to connect with you!
